Opener
Today we will be talking about non-renewable resources from chapter 8 in the Nelson Geo 7 textbook. Some examples of non-renewable resources are: oil, gasoline, fossil fuels, minerals, coal and many more. Lets take one example. Oil is an everyday thing we use. We use it mainly for cars, machines and other things. Alberta has the world's third biggest oil deposits. In 2014, Alberta produced about 166 billion barrels. To put that into perspective, that's 6,972,000,000,000 gallons a year. Now this process of extracting oils from oil deposits or oil sands damage the environment greatly. In order to extract the oil they have to cut down trees for surface or strip mining. Also when they extract oil they need large pieces of land to mine and also when extracted it produces dirty oily water as waste. Environmentalists oppose the idea of oil but oil supporters say that the oil business will open more jobs and will boost the Canadian economy and will even out the environmental costs. Do you agree or disagree?
